Gary Hart
Another good Huffington Post post, this time from Gary Hart.
It is not (in my opinion) partisan, it is an honest criticism of the party system. He freely admits that we don't know what the Democratic Party stands for any more, but he puts forth a rather compelling argument that we really don't know what the Republican Party stands for, either (or at least, we know they no longer stand for what they traditionally have stood for). Given that we all KNOW the failings of the current Democrat party, I'll quote a paragraph on the Republicans:
But many traditional Republicans don’t know what their Party stands for either. It used to stand for balanced budgets, resistance to foreign entanglement, laissez faire economics, smaller government, and individual freedom. Not any more. That old coalition has disappeared as well. The new Republican Party stands for big government, huge deficits, pre-emptive warfare, massive nation-building, neo-imperialism in the Middle East, intrusion on your privacy, and a semi-official state religion dictated by fundamentalist ministers.
He makes me almost believe that one day soon we will finally break out of the party system and elect an independent as President, someone who will be more interested in doing the job and getting done the things that need doing, rather than following a party line.
Liam.
