Russian Fiction

This is an interesting link.

Not sure I believe it, but it is sourced to Bloomberg, so I believe that the Russian Professor there quoted said what he reportedly said.

He claims that the U.S. is on a rapid decline and will fairly soon break into six autonomous countries over the financial crisis.

Those regions are the Pacific Coast, the South, Texas, the Atlantic Coast, the Central States and the Northern states.

I think I'd bet against it, so I'm not sure why I'm posting it, I'm just finding it fascinating the kinds of speculations people are putting on the financial crisis.

Liam.

Thanks, Cindy, that's interesting stuff.

I don't think that's quite the same as the original assertion, this seems to be more in line with states rights, trying to undo the rampant expansion of Federal powers over States powers that has happened especially in recent years ("recent" = "within our lifetimes").

I definitely think that there's a lot of unconstitutional usurpation of power by the Federal government, and I think that it could be addressed and returned to the states without necessarily breaking up the country into sovereign nations.

Of course, it could also come down to armed conflict, if the states were to assert their rights, the feds were to try to shut them down, and the Supreme Court were to side against the Constitution and with the Federal government.

But it COULD just realign relatively peacefully and not result in smaller sovereign nations in place of the United States.

Thanks for the link!

Will.

Well, I won't be moving out of Texas anytime soon, that's for certain. But it looks as though the border below us may dissolve, if Mexico collapses or we simply 'purchase' a little land south of the Rio Grande'. Both look likely now. It will be interesting to watch history in the making. I'll practice my Spanish in the meantime.

I can't imagine armed conflict within our borders though, except small "waco-like" excursions to quiet down anyone trying to take on too big of a leadership role than they legally should.

Wouldn't it be awesome to actually see a new government forming under dramatic circumstances like that? I don't mean it would be a good thing, but it would be fascinating to watch and/or participate nonetheless. Hey, maybe that's how blacks felt on January 20th? I never thought of it like that. I was in my own world, scratching my head.

As far as Mexico is concerned, a few years ago it looked likely that Quebec was going to secede from Canada, and there was some speculation that some of the remainder might decide to petition to join the U.S., and that didn't happen. I'm a bit more worried about their violence (Mexico's, I mean, not Canada's) spilling over into our southern states, and by the end of Obama's first term, we may find a police action in Mexico to trump the military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. We shall see.

I agree it would be fascinating (and terrifying) to be around for the formation of a new country around us, although I still think there's more good than bad about the U.S. and that changes here should be evolutionary, not revolutionary.

So I agree, it wouldn't be a good thing, but it would definitely be interesting to be a part of.
