End of an Era

Western Union ended its telegram services last Friday.

This isn't really important to anyone, and isn't surprising in light of newer technologies such as telephones, fax machines and e-mail.

But still, it's a notable end of an era and so I thought it worth a quick note.

Liam.

My wife's first job, in the early 90s, was at Western Union doing "telegram" work. Basically she would take a phone call (often in Spanish), type in the address and message and take credit card payment, and it would be (I think) printed and mailed out. Maybe there was also direct delivery available, I'm not really sure.

OK, it wasn't actually her "first" job. But it was a job she did hold down in the early 90s, while working her way through college for her now-useless journalism degree. :) And I did verify that personal delivery was an option in certain areas, although it was much more expensive.

She also told me she once took a telegram from Woody Allen. But she doesn't remember who it was going to or what it was about.

Most likely it wasn't Mia Farrow. ;-)
